Professional Charlotte NC Family Photographer – Pretty Packaging

Professional Charlotte NC Family Photographer – Pretty Packaging

As a professional Charlotte NC Family Photographer, I want to make the experience of working with me for a portrait session to be as full service as possible, and the delivery of beautiful printed products is the final culmination of that experience.  So, when my clients receive their products, I want to add to the excitement of the moment when they finally get to see everything that we worked together to create.   We’ve had our initial call when they decided to book their session with me, our pre-session consultation when we prepared for their session, we worked together on their portrait session day, and met for their in-person ordering appointment where we selected their wall prints and products.  Now the moment is finally here – the moment they see the end result!

I want my clients to feel like a child on Christmas morning that can’t wait to open their presents (and many have told me that they do feel this way as they open up their pretty boxes).  Therefore, not only do I choose beautiful, high quality printed products from the best print labs in the industry, but I also want my packaging to reflect everything about my business and the experience of working with me.

So, I absolutely love working with Rice Studio Supply for my print and product packaging.  They have been my primary vendor for over 4 years, and have always delivered high quality products with phenomenal customer service.  My favorite products include the Cocoa Artisan Portrait Cases for larger prints along with the Espresso Presentation Boxes for smaller prints, in addition to the white Kraft Shopper Bags paired with orange tissue paper.  All of these items have my logo imprinted in Bright Copper to coordinate with my branding.

The final piece that ties off my branding is a beautiful die cut ribbon that I purchase from Noble Gift Packaging.  The flower in the ribbon is the perfect complement to my logo and helps tie everything together (forgive the pun).

If you are a photographer that is looking for a vendor to help deliver beautiful packaging products to help finish and pull your branding together, then I highly recommend reaching out to Rice Studio Supply.

Thanks for reading!

Classic Charlotte NC Family Portraits – National Siblings Day

Classic Charlotte NC Family Portraits – National Siblings Day

As you may have heard, today is National Siblings Day and I love taking a few moments on this day to share some of my favorite portraits of siblings from the last year.  Siblings are your instant best friends, biggest supporters, shoulders to cry on, and they will be a special part of almost all of your childhood memories.  And yes, they are also the people you will likely fight with the most, but regardless of the fights, teasing, or competing, they are the people that will always be there for you when you need them. They will be in your biggest cheerleaders in life, and even your defenders should you ever need them.

There is just something amazing that comes with being and having a sibling, and it is definitely something to celebrate. It is unconditional and everlasting.

Having a sister myself, I have always loved the song “Sisters” featured in the movie White Christmas.  ‘Sisters, Sisters, there were never such devoted sisters . . .”

Charlotte NC Family Photograph shares classic sibling portraits for National Siblings Day

While many of these are classic portraits of siblings, I think the last image at the bottom may be one of my favorites showing the silliness of siblings working together in opposite of their parents. That image was not posed or requested and was just a natural moment from an adorable family session.

And below, here are some favorite images of my family members.  On the top left is my four beautiful nieces, which my daughter jumping in.  On the top right is a photograph from a family party showing my father with his eldest brother along with my aunt and my mom. The brother two images highlight the sibling goofiness and friendship of my own two children.  The bottom left photograph was taken by my talented friend, Annette Goodman, from Annette Goodman Photography during our family portrait session last year.

Experienced Charlotte NC Family Photographer | When Your Child Is Always On the Move

So you want to update your family portraits, but your tiny little one is active and mobile, and you are worried that they will not be able to sit still for a portrait session. Maybe they recently started crawling or walking, but now it seems they never want to sit still.

Does this sound familiar?  No worries at all, and you are not alone.  Little ones between the ages of 8 months and 3 years old almost never want to stop moving (but, hopefully all that moving gets them so tired that they sleep well each night).

So, how do I photograph little ones on the go and still deliver beautiful family portraits for my clients?

If you want a happy, smiling, giggly child, you definitely do not want to force them to sit for photographs. You honestly don’t want to force them to do anything.  Instead, we want to make sure they are happy and having fun!

Here are some tips to help prepare you for a family photo session with toddlers and little kids, so you know what you can expect from your portrait session with me:

  • Chairs, Benches, Fences, or even fake tree stumps (yes, I own a fake tree stump)
Some little ones will find these props amusing and entertaining and will voluntarily choose to sit on them. Yay!   But we always follow the safety first rule when photographing children.  When using any seating that is elevated off the ground, I always keep parents within arm’s reach of their child, but just outside of the frame of my camera, to prevent falls and keep their tiny little ones safe from harm.

  • Pick them up!
This is one of the many reasons I love family portrait sessions and including parents in photographs! When children are young, they generally enjoy being held by mom or dad, plus it can give them a sense of security at the start of the session.  So we use that to our advantage and I have parents hold or pick up their children for a a snuggle, a quick spin, a toss in the air, or a shared giggle!  Plus, I can photograph you with them AND I can also zoom in close and photograph just your child!  Would you guess that these first two little ones were being held in Mom’s or Dad’s arms?

  • Hold their Hands and Walk or RUN!
Little ones that are just getting started with walking or cruising LOVE to hold their parents hands and take a few steps and the smiles and giggles just naturally appear! It’s a perfect time to grab a few portraits!  And the bigger ones love to run and almost always starting laughing when Moms and Dads join in their fun!

Skilled Waxhaw NC Family Photographer

  • Tickles and Tackles
Plain and simple – “who wants to tackle Mom? ”  You can count on Moms and Dads know their little ones’ ticklish spots to bring on the big giggles.  But I just adore when munchkins run and tackle Mom or Dad.

Experienced Waxhaw NC Family Photographer keeps children happy by encouraging tackling of parents

  • On the move
Sometimes, children just want to spin, walk, march or run!  And we just want smiles, so during the session we let them do what will make them happiest!

Professional Marvin North Carolina Family Child Photographer Carolyn Ann Ryan

  • Toys, Bubbles, Leaves or Hats
When my clients bring toys or props for the kids, I typically leave these for the end of the session, simply because I never want to be the person that needs to take something away from a child during their portraits (because that can bring tears).   But bubbles, stuffed animals, or even something as simple as a leaf or a big sister’s hat, can provide enough distraction and entertainment to keep them from moving away!  And sometimes, they are just SO excited to hold something in their little hands! I can almost hear the squeals in these photographs!Professional Charlotte NC Family Portraits
  • Most importantly, just have fun. (And maybe throw some leaves!)
If my clients simply focus on having fun with their children, you never know the moments that will just happen and that is the BEST part of photographing family portrait sessions!  I absolutely adore the moments we create together and look forward to creating beautiful images with your family!

Classic Marvin NC Family Photography | Sunny Days

I have just loved the gorgeous sunny days in the South Charlotte and Marvin area of North Carolina.  The warmth and sunshine provide a beautiful glow for classic family portrait sessions.  I was so thrilled to meet and work with this family that found my business on The National Association of Professional Child Photographers (NAPCP) web site.

Charlotte, NC Family Photographer | November Rain

Charlotte, NC Family Photographer | November Rain

From the moment we first discussed family portraits, this Mom knew she wanted beautiful Fall Foliage, and I couldn’t wait to see what Charlotte, North Carolina had in store for us during my first Fall season in The Tar Heel State. But, unfortunately, what October and November had in store this year was rain – lots and lots of rain.  So, that not only meant lots of rescheduled portrait sessions for almost every photographer in the area, it also meant that most of the leaves fell off the trees before they even finished turning colors.  It was just that kind of season.  But after a few weeks of rain, the sunshine finally came along with a  few warm days to enjoy it.

Now, I had to find a location that still had foliage. One of the first things I had to do in relocating was find new locations for my family sessions.  I met with fellow photographer friends and I even did some scouting on my own. But, after checking my favorite spots, the foliage just wasn’t there anymore. I had asked friends and even my husband, but it just wasn’t around.  And then, another client had a suggestion and when I visited this new spot,  I rejoiced.  The park was situated just below street level near a few office buildings and the leaves were still on the trees.  It was shielded from the winds, and it was the perfect Fall family portrait session location.  In all my travels, I had missed this gem of a location.  But thanks to my client – we found it – and it was hiding just one block away from my husband’s office!  He could probably even see it from his office.

Now we had a beautiful location, a gorgeous day, and it was time to work the family portrait photography magic.  I hope you enjoy the photographs from this Charlotte, NC Family Portrait Session.

Charlotte, NC Family Photographer | Beauty Multiplied

Charlotte, NC Family Photographer | Beauty Multiplied

I really have a special place in my heart for families that have four girls.  While I also love families with 1, 2, 3, 5 or more girls, there is just something about the magic number 4.  Maybe, it’s because my only sister has four beautiful daughters and my nieces are some of the most awesome kids I know.  There is something so amazing about their sisterhood and friendships – words can’t even describe it.  It is so evident in the way they support each other in everything they do.  And well, my sister is the equivalent of a superhero in my eyes.  I absolutely have no idea how she does all that she does, and in the midst of what could be chaos for some, has created an incredibly loving and crazily fun home and family.

And so, I have a crazy amount of respect and love for parents with four daughters, and I have so much spending time with their families and seeing the family dynamics.  This family was no exception, and I saw the same crazily awesome feeling of sisterhood existing in this four beautiful girls, and it was such a pleasure to spend an afternoon with them.  But I think all in the family would agree, that the littlest munchkin absolutely STOLE.THE.SHOW!  We just couldn’t stop giggling at the amazing and sometimes hilarious expressions she provided.  It became evident that she just didn’t love sitting in the grass, especially as she would hold her legs up in the air while Dad was trying to sit her down.  And then, she just kept us smiling throughout the day.  These images not only gave us beautiful photographs for wall portraits and holiday cards, but we were also able to create the most perfect Thank You card for the littlest first birthday party!

I hope these make you smile today!

Charlotte, NC Family Photographer | Even when they are not so little . . .

As a family photographer, I truly believe there is never a bad time for family portraits. It doesn’t matter the age of your children, younger or older, it’s always a great time to update your photographs.  Children deserve to have tons of beautiful images and photographs with their parents that they will keep and treasure years into the future.  When children are teenagers, it’s awesome to remind them of the importance of family and the closeness they share with their family members.  As children get older, they often start to realize that their parents are their best friends and their biggest fans and champions.  These relationships are so fun to capture in images for both parents and children. During this particular session,  I especially loved showing these  beautiful girls just how stunning they really are, and my favorite photographs from the day were the ones we created  of the sisters together.  Their incredibly close friendship just shines right through in these photographs.  Through thick or thin, these sisters will forever be each other’s best friend.

Dreamy North Carolina Newborn Portraits – Sleepy, Happy Baby

Dreamy North Carolina Newborn Portraits – Sleepy, Happy Baby

The joy that comes from capturing images of a peaceful, sleeping baby in my newborn sessions will forever be something that I can cherish as a photographer. I know from watching my own children when they were young, how overwhelmed with emotion you can become as you can find those quiet moments to steal away from the everyday bustle of parenthood.  I am so happy to provide this young family with that same memory each time they look at these images on their walls.  And as their sleepy, happy baby grows in to a young toddler always on the go they can stop and look at these images and smile.

Playful Marvin, North Carolina Family Photographer | A Wish

Throughout our lives we wish for different things.  As children it’s typically a toy, as we get older it’s a car, then as we become adults, it’s a family.  Family is where we feel the safest and can truly be ourselves.  I was honored to capture these special moments where mother and son could let loose, be themselves.  There is such a special bond between these two, and I enjoyed watching them have fun together – isn’t that what family is all about?

Priceless Charlotte, NC Children’s Photography | Tiny Tuesday – Mother’s Love

Priceless Charlotte, NC Children’s Photography | Tiny Tuesday – Mother’s Love

Today’s Tiny Tuesday post is from one of this year’s Fall portrait sessions.  I LOVE this moment and so does this little man’s Mommy, and it might be our favorite image from the entire session.

When we started the session, this little guy was being shy and just wanted to stay very close to his Mom and also his stuffed animal, George.   But even though he was being shy, there were still moments to be captured.

I love this image because you can feel the tenderness.  You don’t need a smile, a giggle or laughter to show the love that exists between a parent and child.   For me, this image shows sweetness, comfort, security, love and curiosity all rolled into one.  And I’m just completely mesmerized by those adorable eyes.

Enjoy and I hope everyone has a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Lovable Marvin, NC Family Photography | Nieces

Lovable Marvin, NC Family Photography | Nieces

I am blessed to have four beautiful, little nieces living not too far away.  They are my daughter’s best friends, and we just love spending time with them.

I think my sister loves having a photographer in the family, but I don’t mind. It is a pleasure to spend a few hours with these girls and capture their beautiful smiles and watch them grow.
This year, some of my favorites are of my youngest niece, because she made me work for some of those smiles as you can see below, but capturing all of her personality (including the “fake” pouts) was just so much fun. Sometimes, those are the images that make me giggle most when I’m post-processing the session on my computer.

Here are some highlights from our End of Summer session last week.  {Thanks girls for being so wonderful and fun!}

Joyous Charlotte NC Family Portraits | One Reason I Love My Job

Last week, I had the opportunity to hang a family portrait on the wall of someone very special to me.  As you might expect, I’ve photographed my older sister’s family almost as much as my own.  She has four beautiful daughters that are full of spirit and energy. And while I have many beautiful images of them, this one has become one of my all-time favorite photographs.  They are a family that is always on the go, and always having fun together, and this image just captures who they are as a family.

Marvin, NC Family Photographer | Time to Get in Front of the Camera!

Marvin, NC Family Photographer | Time to Get in Front of the Camera!

A few weeks ago, the younger sister of a family friend called to purchase a gift certificate for a portrait session. It was wonderful to chat with her, but little did I know that by the end of the conversation I would be in tears and she would teach me a valuable lesson about photography. She would change the way I feel about being in front of the camera.

It was just a few days after Mother’s Day when we spoke. Her mom had passed away a few years ago, and I had forgotten how tough Mother’s Day must be for her. As I’m sure many of you saw on Facebook, for the whole week leading up to Mother’s Day, everyone was updating their profile pictures to show photographs with their Moms. She said that while it was painful for her to see all her friend’s photos, she really wanted to find a photo with her own mother to share with everyone.
But, she explained that like many of us, her Mother often shied away from being in front of the camera and getting into pictures. Maybe her hair wasn’t done, or she was not wearing make-up, or she just didn’t like how she looked at that moment, but she would wave the camera away and request not to be photographed.

Now, don’t get me wrong, her mother truly was a wonderful woman that raised an absolutely beautiful family. She was a fantastic mother, and I know her children loved her tremendously. She just didn’t like to be in pictures.

But unfortunately, now my friend is wishing she had just few fun photographs with her mother in them. She wants pictures of her with her mother, hugging, smiling, laughing, and just having fun. It wouldn’t matter the occasion or the day, just any photograph from any random day would be wonderful. She wants to remember her mother as she was every day, because her mother was beautiful. And it certainly wouldn’t matter whether her mother was wearing make-up or if her hair looked good, because she will always remember her mother as the most beautiful woman she ever knew.

As she spoke, I thought about how many pictures I’ve taken of my own children. I have a bunch of my daughter, son and husband together, but I’m always behind the camera. I always take the pictures, and I am guilty of not wanting to be in pictures because I didn’t do my hair, or I’m not wearing make-up, or because I want to lose weight.

We usually think that we are taking the photographs of our children for ourselves, for sharing with our friends on Facebook, or for the grandparents to show off to their friends. But we must not forget that we also need be in the pictures with our children. These images are for them to share someday.

When our children are 30 or 40 years old, they will want to look back and see family photos. They won’t just want to see how cute they were, but they will want to see how adorable their parents were with them. They will want to update their profile pictures on Facebook near Mother’s or Father’s Day to show pictures with their Mom and Dad.

As you can imagine, by the end of our phone conversation, I was crying. I wished I could give my friend a picture of her with her mom. But I also realized that I need to get into the pictures with my children. I want to ensure that they will have the photographs to remember how much I love them.

So, for me personally, I have a completely different way of looking at photographs. I’m not just referring to professional portraits, but this applies to casual photos on vacations, at birthday parties, or just a fun day at home. I make sure to hand over the camera and I happily jump in and hug my kids.

So, please, hand the camera over and get in the picture. At your child’s next birthday, don’t take the picture of your child blowing out their birthday candles, but pass the camera to a friend, and get behind your child and show them that you were there with them.

And don’t worry, in our children’s eyes – we always look good!

Adorable Waxhaw, NC Family Photography | Spring Fun

A new benefit of my job is reconnecting with friends from many years ago, and getting the opportunity to spend time with their families and children.  Kerry and I went to high school together, and we were part of a small group of girls that would commute across the island via the train every weekday. We haven’t seen each other seen Kerry graduated one year ahead of me, but with the help of Facebook and other high school friends we reconnected in recent years, and I now had the pleasure of meeting her husband and two beautiful little girls for a fun Spring Family Portrait Session.

We had a great time at their home and then traveled to a nearby park to complete the session before lunch. The girls were wonderful, and I just loved capturing their personalities for their Mom.

Cherished Charlotte, NC Family Portraits – Hugs from Mom

Cherished Charlotte, NC Family Portraits – Hugs from Mom

Whenever I see this image, I get chills.  I’m taken back to that moment and I love thinking of these four beautiful girls running to their Mom. All of them running up the hill to see Mom and get their hugs. It’s heartwarming and precious, and was just one moment that was part of that day and the amazing session I had with this family. I couldn’t plan a picture like that, but we were having such a great time together, and this moment just happened.

Mother’s Day is less than 3 weeks away. Sometimes it is hard to find the right present to show these wonderful women in our lives how much we care about them and love everything they do for us.

Mothers are often the core of a family and may be the glue that holds everything together. They are the ones we run to when we need a big hug or need to see their smile or maybe just hear their voice.

So, this Mother’s Day, think about giving the mother in your family a gift that will always make them smile. Give them the opportunity to create timeless portraits and images of your family that they will treasure for years to come – images that will take them back in time to the amazing moments that occur every day and that capture the adorable smiles that have stolen their heart (and this probably includes your own).

Gift certificates for portrait sessions are available and make a beautiful and thoughtful Mother’s Day present – one that will ultimately last forever. Contact me today to purchase one for the amazing mother in your life. (These also make wonderful presents for mothers-to-be)!
